Where's Your Luck Going?

Jupiter enters Capricorn on December 18 and will stay in Capricorn until early January 2009. So what does that mean? Well, a lot depends on where it is and what it's doing in your chart, but in general, here's what I would be expecting:

First of all, Jupiter is in its fall in Capricorn. That isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it's something I would look at. I see the dignities not so much as good or bad, but as measures of political correctness. So if we look at Jupiter in general, we see themes such as expansion/expansiveness, making and spending big bucks, judgement and judgementality (in terms of giving advice and making pronouncement on people and things, risk-taking, and the ability to be in the right place at the right time. Jupiterian people tend to be larger-than-life, flashy, and occasionally over the top. They are often seen as teachers, gurus, or role models of sorts. Negatively, Jupiter is the planet associated with bullshit and various indiscriminate behaviours. When Jupiter is in its fall, stereotypical Jupiterian behaviours are not trendy in the envioronment, So we can safely say that this might be a year when flash, bullshit, and conspicuous consumption may be deemed as not politically correct. Optimism, another Jupiterian trait, is of course always in fashion, but only if tempered with discrimination. This is a year when talk's going to be cheap and action speaks louder than words. So that optimism needs to be channeled into getting tangible results and that talk needs to be backed up with doing. Never mind "some day"; some day is now. And no, "the Universe will provide" should NOT be your mantra this year. Instead, trust the old adage "The Universe helps those who help themselves." If you have a plan and channel Jupiter's energy into that plan, you can get some very nice results --- including money, success, and popularity. But since both Jupiter and Saturn are in Earth now, you need to make sure your plan is practical and grounded in reality. Take it out of your head, put it on paper, and see how it looks. If you're not sure about it give it to a friend or trusted mentor to look at. If it's realistic, and if you work at it, the goodies will follow and should be starting to manifest on at least a small scale by spring.

Time and space don't permit me to go into all the ramifications of Jupiter transits, but we can generalize about its transits through the houses as follows:

First House: Expand your environment or expand your body. This one is notorious for weight gains, which of course are not at all politically correct. However, it also opends up a whole raft of opportunities to meet new people and have new experiences. Try something new and you won't have time to gain weight.

Second House: This could be a good year for you financially. However, you need to be careful about wasting the money that comes in. Remember, conspicuous consumption isn't trendy this year. This is a good time to do things that can increase your income and/or spend money on things that can increase your income. Think advertising, buying a new computer, or even finding a good account to show you how to save money on your taxes.

Third House: Good for getting your resume up-to-date, taking courses that will help you gain a promotion or simply looking for work that offers greater scope for advancement and a little more challenge than your current job.

Fourth House: It might be time to remodel, move to a bigger place, or otherwise expand or enhance your living quarters.

Fifth House: This one can be good for risk-taking involving either your heart or your money. Just remember that it needs to be a calculated risk --- not one you take on impulse. Know both the best-case and worst-case scenarios before you jump in.

Sixth House: There could be some very positive dealings with co-workers or other people in your field.

Seventh House: The books say this is a good time to get married. However, in my experience, it's more likely to give you a "don't fence me in" feeling. Expect to meet a lot of people, whether you want to or not. And expect some of them to be very good additions to your life.

Eighth House: This could be a lot of different things, but the operative words are usually "joint" and/or "vicarious". Often something happens to somebody else that has a vicarious beneficial impact on you. Sometime a business partnership forms.

Ninth House: You may become interested in studying philosophy, astrology, or something with spiritual overtones. Jupiter has a very strong tie-in with astrology and astrologers, so for those of you having this transit, expect to get more involved. This is also a great time to plan a trip to Lily Dale, Cassadaga, India, or any sacred or spiritual site that catches your fancy.

Tenth House: You may receive some sort of honor or public recognition. A promotion is another possibility. On the other hand, I've seen a lot of cases where what this brough was jury duty. It all depends on what you've been doing...

Eleventh House: You might be meeting influential people or dealing with clergy, lawyers, astrologers, professors, or other highly educated people.

Twelfth House: You could be overcoming a vice or hang-up, getting rid of a skeleton in the closet,or patching things up with an estranged friend or loved one.

So how does this fit into your own game plan? If it doesn't, then there's probably more to you chart than I can speculate on without seeing it. Maybe it's time for a consultation. If you have planets in Cancer, Jupiter will be making oppositions to those planets at some time during the year. Last but not least, if you're looking for a gemstone to maximize your Jupiter potentials, you might try a brown topaz, an azurmalachite, or one of the darker colored labradorites. Azurmalachite is a combination of Jupiter/Sagittarius and Saturn/Capricorn energies. It is a comfort stone and very helpful for alleviating anxiety and dis-ease. It's an excellent stone if your goal is grounded psychic development. It can be somewhat helpful for attracting money as well.
Labradorite is a negativity-deflector and a protective stone and can also be somewhat helpful for attracting money. This one's great if you're feeling the need for a guardian angel to look out for you. Brown or red-brown topaz stimulates good taste and discrimination and helps you cut through doubt --- especially self-doubt. This one is good for those of you who are more inclined to NOT trust the universe at all than to trust it indiscriminately. It is also helpful for those of you prone to impulse buying.

Want to learn more about the relationship between astrology and gemstones? Saturday classes are beginning March 1 and will also run March 15 and 22nd. These classes are based on my 23 years of research and study which I am hoping will FINALLY culminate in a book this year. Each class is stand-alone though if you come in at session 2 or 3, I would ask you to purchase the reference materials from the previous sessions so you can keep up. Also note that individual sessions will only be an option if space is available. Classes are small --- 5 people maximum and pre-registration is strongly advised.

The 3 sessions will cover more than two dozen gemstones in total from my list of 240 under consideration for inclusion in the book. We will look at their mythology, their astrological correlations, their uses, and gemstone theory in general including how to identify stones that are easily confused with other stones, color-treated and synthetic stones, where the stone comes from availability and cost. Extensive handouts will be provided at each class. I will have some specimins on hand, but you are also encouraged to bring a favorite gemstone or piece of jewellry. Minimal knowledge of astrology is needed for the first two sessions --- just knowledge of planets and signs. For the third session you'll also need knowledge of aspects and basic interpretation as we'll be applying material to your own chart so that you can create your own gemstone kit.

A course outline follows:

SESSION 1, SATURDAY, MARCH 1, 2008, 10 AM -4 PM
Overview of gemstone theory. Colors, gemstones, and astrology. Gem families. Choosing stones. Receiving and giving jewelry and gemstones.
Gems to be covered in this class: Diamond, ruby, topaz, much of the agate family, the tourmaline family, the quartz family, hematite, sulfur, azurite, apatite, jade, the garnet family, aquamarine, and apophyllite.

SESSION 2, SATURDAY MARCH 15, 2008, 10 A.M. -4 P.M.
How to choose gems for particular planet-sign combinations (Mars in Cancer, Venus in Virgo, etc.) Contraindications for gemstone usage. Contrast between Vedic and Western astrological correlations. Cleansing your stones. Charging your stones.
Gems to be covered in this class: Sapphire, sardonyx, turquoise, pearl, opal, moonstone, bloodstone, carnelian, amazonite, fire agate, moss agate, spinel, emerald, and peridot.

SESSION 3, SATURDAY, MARCH 22, 2008, 10 A.M. -4 P.M.
Using and wearing your stones. Tailoring gemstones to your chart to deal with specific aspects, house placements, transits, etc.
We will also discuss any stones of interest that have not already been covered in previous classes. Let me know at the end of session 2 which ones you'd like to know more about.

Cost of this course is $100 pre-registered or $125 at the door, payable in full at the first session. Single session are $50 if space permits. Location is East-End Toronto.

December Transit Update

Venus is going into Scorpio on Wednesday, December 5. That means the Universe will be nudging you to look a little more deeply at your life and your life-patterns. Are you content with your relationships? Your cash flow? The rest of your status quo? Why do you like what you like and attract what you attract? Be prepared for some self-scrutiny --- and maybe some scrutiny from others as wel.

Note the aspects transiting Venus makes to your natal Sun. Expect these to activate your social life. If there's someone you've been wanting to meet or somewhere you've been wanting to go, this could be the time it happens. Even if you DON'T want to go out, you could find a friend attempting to drag you out for a little bit of festivity. If Venus is making an easy aspect to your Sun, go! You'll have a good time whether you're expecting to or not. If Venus is making an opposition or square, that doesn't mean you should stay home, but probably you can expect some sort of little bothersome things to drop a bit of snow on your parade. Maybe it's a bad hair day or a pest at the party who gloms onto you and won't go away. Whatever...In any case, this too shall pass and it's probably too minor to spoil an otherwise good time, so don't brood about it! If Venus is making a quincunx or semi-sextile to your Sun, expect there to be some fine-tuning of your plans or expectations. Again, not a big deal, but you may need to be flexible as probably what you THINK you're going to do won't be quite what you wind up doing.

Also note whether or not transiting Venus is aspecting your progressed Sun. Often these transits bring new romances --- or at the very least new people --- into your life. And often these people turn out to be important, romantically or otherwise. You can get some indication of what's going to happen by comparing the nature of the transiting-to-natal and the transiting-to-progressed aspect and checking the dates for both.

Don't know where your progressed Sun is? Want to learn more about transits? If your New Year's resolution is to get back into astrology or add more depth to your knowledge, classes are starting in January, and space is limited.

UNDERSTANDING YOUR PROGRESSED CHART is a full-day workshop focusing on the progressed chart. You will learn how to interpret and synthesize progressions and see how they tie into transits. Date is January 12 for 10 AM to 4 PM. Cost is $35 pre-registered or $50 at the door. I'm expecting this one to fill, so there may not be room for last-minute registrants. If you're interested, my advice is to register early.

OPPOSITIONS BY TRANSIT will be running on Thursday evening --- February 7, 21, and 28. These classes run from 7 PM to 9:30 PM assuming we start on time, which I try very hard to do. Cost of this one is $85 for all three sessions pre-registered or $100 at the door payable in full the first night.

Last but not least, if you're new to astrology or have done only a little reading, beginners classes are available. No date has been set for these yet; let me know your schedule and I'll do my best to work with it. Cost is $100 for 4 2-hour sessions, and I need a minimum of 3 people for the class to run. Tell your friends --- and bring your friends. Usually the beginner's classes are great fun and a good way to learn about yourself and your friends. All handouts and study materials are included in the cost.

All classes include handouts for study and future reference. Taping is also permitted if you bring a battery-powered recording device. No laptops, please!

SOTA 2008 News - Hotel Information

We've found a hotel for SOTA 2008!

I'm happy to tell you that SOTA will be held from October 23-26,2008 at the Crowne Plaza, 33 Carlson Court, in Toronto.

The hotel is off Dixon Road and a bit further east of the airport than last year's hotel. It is accessible via shuttle from the airport ($6.00 each way) or via TTC (bus from Kipling Station).

Room rates will be $119 single or double. They are newly renovated and are bigger and brighter than those in last year's hotel. All rooms have wireless internet access; there will also be internet access in the lobby, the business centre, or both. At the moment this is in the lobby and there are 4 computers.

Crowne Plaza participates in Sleep Advantage, so in addition to brand new beds and pillows that conform to your head, they offer packets containing an environmental/relaxation cd (and there is a cd player built into the clock in each room), ear plugs, an eye mask, a clip to keep the drapes fully closed, and lavender spray. There are handicapped-accessible rooms with walk-in showers; there are also one- and two-bedroom suites.

The restaurant has both buffet and a la carte menus. You can get either a continental or full buffet at breakfast and just soup and salad bar or full buffet at lunch. If you prefer to go outside of the hotel, there are many restaurants within walking distance, incuding Boston Pizza, Mother Tucker's Marketplace, Tony Roma's Ribs, and more.

Now that we've got a hotel, the next step is to select speakers. I hope to have this done by the end of December and will be posting regular updates as speakers confirm. We will be adding a couple of lunch-time lectures to the roster this year. There will be an additional charge for these regardless of whether you have already registered or register once the flyer comes out.

We will also be adding an early morning Sunday breakfast for those who cannot make the Closing Ceremonies. There will probably be a draw for at least one prize at this. Again, there will be an additional charge for the breakfast.

Last but not least, we are changing our price structure. This year it will be possible to sign up for only the main conference activities (from 10-6) or for the full conference including Opening Ceremonies, Showcase and banquet. And yes, if you just want one evening activity you can add that on. Or, as usual, you can register for just one day with or without the evening activity. For those of you who have already registered for conference plus banquet, note that your fees for Opening Ceremonies and the Showcase were included in that price.

I'm still planning to get the flyers out in late January and will also get Pay Pal up and running at that time. For those of you who prefer to register by mail and are not on the mailing list, drop me a line at SOTA2008@rogers.com and I'll see that you get your flyer in time to take advantage of the early bird rates.

SPOTLIGHT ON THE OPENING CEREMONIES AT SOTA

Opening Ceremonies at SOTA is your opportunity to meet the SOTA speakers and the other attendees, reconnect with old acquaintances, and have a bit of food and drink before and/or after our keynote speaker. This is also where you'll hear about any last-minute changes or late-breaking news you might want to know about in order to make the most of your conference experience. We'll have a selection of very nice nibblies --- not just chips and dip --- so you're safe to eat lightly on Thursday night. We will also have a cash bar. Doors will open on October 25 at 6:45, with the ceremonies beginning at 7:00 p.m.

This year the Opening Ceremonies are being co-sponsored by Astrology Toronto, Toronto's own very active local astrology group. Astrology Toronto holds monthly lectures on a variety of astrological topics and has an e-list that keeps people abreast of astrological happenings in the GTA. Several members of their executive will be on hand to provide you with more information about membership and upcoming events if you're interested.

Our keynote address, A TIME FOR OUR STORIES, will be presentedby Michael Barwick, Vice-President of ATI. Michael is a dynamic and interesting lecturer who has received excellent reviews both at past SOTA conferences and at local lectures.

Admission to the Opening Ceremonies is included in the full-conference package. If you're only attending on Thursday and/or Friday or if you just want to come out and hear Michael, the cost is only $20 CDN/$15 US until August 24.

If you want to hear Michael but can't make it to the Opening Ceremonies, he'll be back again at 4:30 on Saturday. His topic then is "WHO'S AFRAID OF PLUTO IN CAPRICORN? From what I hear, the answer to that one seems to be "a lot of people". Regardless of whether you're afraid or not, and regardless of whether you're a Capricorn, a mundane astrologer, a psychological astrologer, or a classicist, I'm sure Michael will have something to say that piques your interest.

A one-day admission for Saturday is only $80 CDN/ $70 US until July 24. Admission to the banquet is not included in this one-day fee.

SOTA Conference

STATE OF THE ART ("SOTA") is an astrology conference geared to intermediate, advanced, and professional astrologers. As the title implies, its function is to illustrate the state of the art/discipline of astrology by featuring popular speakers and hot topics that exemplify leading-edge thought and techniques. We are unique in North America in that SOTA presents a mix of one-hour, two-hour, and three-hour speakers as well as all-day pre- and post-conference workshops. Featured speakers come from Canada, the U.S. and Europe and in the past have included Martin Davis, Nick Kollerstrom, Joyce Hoen, Maritha Pottenger, Noel Tyl, and many more.

Now in its tenth year, SOTA is a small, friendly conference with accessible speakers and numerous events such as the opening reception and banquet/dance where you can mix and mingle with them. While many of our attendees are from Ontario, we also have attendees from other provinces, very sizeable contingents from Michigan and Ohio, and occasionally attendees from England, Australia, and elsewhere in Europe. Many of our attendees are themselves professionals, though many are students involved with Canada's CAAE programme.

SOTA has received good reviews on many astrological lists and in publications. Come and see why we're called the hidden gem of independent conferences!

TAPING POLICY:

Personal taping is not permitted. Tapes of the lectures will be available during and after the conference.
